Abstract Ocean Necklace
Abstract Ocean Necklace is a jewelry project that focuses on studying the unique shapes and forms found throughout the ocean. The piece shows Johnson experimenting with metals and pushing the limits of her knowledge of the medium. This is also one of the first times Earline creates an abstract piece. She is making art for the sake of it all.
Creating the Top
Johnson found inspiration for the shape of the form by looking at sea anemones, sea worms, and octopus. She found interest in the way the subjects seem to glade and move through the currents. She aimed to create that same sense of movement by using a process in metalworking called Repoussé and chasing on a silver metal sheet.
Making the Base
While working on the base, Johnson wanted to continue the movement created on the top plate. She cut out an organic curvy base from a copper metal sheet. This base would be her stone which was attached using the bezel setting method. Johnso would solder small circles to the base as well.
Putting it all Together
Finally, Johnson attached both pieces together to finish off the design. She also created a link for the necklace cord so that the jewelry piece could easily be worn. This is one of the few functional pieces of jewelry that Johnson has made to date.
